LIBRARY OF KAIRIS

(TEL. 22820 22262)

The Kaireios library was founded in 1987. It is located in Chora of Andros, in Kairi Square. It is housed in a building granted for this purpose by the Kampani family. It includes the personal book collection of Theophilos Kairis, the great representative of the Neo-Hellenic Enlightenment, which is estimated at around 3,000 volumes, among them many hard-to-find editions and unique manuscripts. The library also houses the historical archive of the island, as well as works of art (oil paintings, pictures, engravings, collection of ancient objects). In total, it is estimated that the Library has about 60,000 volumes of publications. It also includes a book preservation and bookbinding department, a lending library and a reading room for the needs of its visitors, as well as a department with children's books. At the same time, the Cairo Library develops a rich publishing activity and puts under its auspices a variety of cultural activities that take place on the island (excavations, conferences, etc.). The Library has been granted the Agadaki mansion and its traditional olive mill in the village of Apaturia, which houses part of the Library's collection of folk culture objects.
