The museum was inaugurated in 1979, on the occasion of the exhibition of the works of Andriotic sculptor Michalis Tombrou. Afterwards, the exhibits were enriched with part of the Foundation's collection, which consists of more than 300 works by distinguished Greek and foreign artists. This first section of the museum is currently located in the Old Wing and functions as a sculpture gallery where you can admire sculptures by Tombro, Zongolopoulos, Chryssa, Nikolaidis, Takis, and other notable Greek sculptors.
Between 1983-1985, periodical exhibitions of Greek painters of the 19th century and younger are hosted. From the large attendance of the public, it was found that the space was not sufficient. That is why in July 1986 the New Wing was inaugurated, opposite the Old Wing building, consisting of four floors. The architectural integration of the building into the surrounding area was awarded in an international competition. The New Wing of the Museum of Contemporary Art includes a library, a shop, a screening room and spaces for presenting international exhibitions. What promoted and established the museum, but also Andros, in Greece and internationally, are the periodic exhibitions of works by the most important artists of our century that the museum organizes every summer since 1986.
