The Folklore Museum of Agios Nikolaos was founded in 1978 by the Cultural Society of Eastern Crete (PEAK), which manages it until today. It is housed in one of the oldest buildings of Agios Nikolaos, next to the lake bridge. The main core of the Museum's collection are objects of all kinds, donated by the Tourist Club of Agios Nikolaos (chaired by doctor Ioannou Zografakis). In the course of time and until today, the collection is constantly enriched with objects donated to the Museum or purchased by the Company's Management.
On display are objects of daily use of a traditional Cretan household, a collection of old sacred icons, a rich collection of wood-carved small objects, manuscripts and other priestly books, old documents referring to local history, agricultural tools, a loom, old cash registers, old photographs, coins, traditional music instruments etc.
The collection of weapons of general Ioannis Alexakis is impressive, with pieces from the time of the Turkish rule in Crete as well as weapons - testimonies from the Balkan Wars in which he himself took part. The collection of tsevredes, Cretan towels and other embroideries, donated by Chrysoula Xanthoudidou-Koundourou, is exceptional.
