The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum pays tribute to the great man of the spirit, the writer, thinker, philosopher, politician, traveler, Nikos Kazantzakis. The Museum, which consists of a set of buildings, is located in the central square of the historical village of Varvaroi, today's Myrtia. The Museum's exhibition is housed in a space, which was formed where the ancestral home of the Anemoyiannis family was, a family related to Captain Michalis, the father of Nikos Kazantzakis. The Museum was founded by Giorgos Anemoyiannis, set designer and costume designer, one of the pioneers of theater in Greece. Its main goal was to preserve the memory of the author and to promote his work and thought. Eleni Samiou-Kazantzakis, the author's second wife, and Patroklos Stavrou, Eleni's stepson, offered significant help.
In the Museum there are manuscripts and notes of the author, samples of correspondence with great thinkers, politicians and writers of his time, first editions of his works in Greek and other languages, rare photographic material, souvenirs from his travels, personal items, models, costumes and material from theatrical performances of his works, here and abroad, portraits and sculptures in his likeness, dozens of foreign language editions of his works - literally from all over the world - all heirlooms, which bring alive the memory and project his work and personality Nikos Kazantzakis. The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum has literally become a global spiritual pilgrimage. Every day, visitors arrive from all over the world, proving how timeless and timely the speech of the great Cretan, ecumenical writer and thinker is.
