The Maritime Museum of Crete was founded in 1973 to house and showcase our maritime traditions, especially those of Crete, which constitute pages of glory and national greatness. These traditions that have been sung by the Greek waves for centuries and handed down from generation to generation by our national conscience. The N.M.K. in Chania it occupies the privileged position at the entrance of the Firkas Fortress, where on December 1, 1973 the Greek flag was raised to seal the Union of Crete with Mother Greece. It is a valuable cultural cell of the city of Chania, of Crete and of Greece in general, with a relief representation of the glorious historical path of our nation.
