Dionysios Solomos, our national poet, who came from Zakynthos, lived the last years of his life in Corfu. Specifically, he remained on the island from 1828 to 1857, when he died.
He wrote some of his greatest works on the island of Faiakon. He developed a close friendship with the Corfu musician Nikolaos Mantzaros, who set the "Hymn to Freedom" and other poems of Solomos to music.
The house where our great poet lived all these years suffered great damage from the bombings during the Second World War. But it was restored and today it functions as a museum, while the center of Corfu Studies is also housed here. It is located on Arseniou Street, near Mouragia, in one of the most picturesque parts of the city, overlooking the sea.
In the exhibition space of the museum you will see the poet's office and a collection of his personal items and rare memorabilia. You will also see all versions of his works, old and new.
Also of interest is the collection of anecdotal photographs that are exhibited in the museum and present persons and events related to the life, work and turbulent era in which Dionysios Solomos lived.
