The museum of Asian art is housed in the palaces of Saints Michael and George. It is an imposing British-style building that was built between 1819 and 1824 and was used as the residence of the respective commissioner, as the seat of the knightly order of Saints Michael and George and as the seat of the Ionian Senate.
In the halls of the ground floor, historical relics and furniture from the time of the Ionian Senate are exhibited. On the palace floor, among other exhibits, you will admire the famous collection of Asian art. It includes more than 10,000 exhibits, donated by G. Manos, N. Hatzivasiliou and others, which come from China, Japan, India, Korea, Cambodia, Thailand and Tibet.
The Asian Art museum is the only museum in Greece dedicated exclusively to the art and antiquities of the Far East and India.
Of particular interest is the Greco-Buddhist collection of sculptures from Gandhara, Pakistan, dating from the 1st to the 5th AD. century.
