The Archaeological Museum of Corfu is housed in a building built in the years 1962 - 1965. In the halls of the museum you will see the important finds from excavations in Corfu that tell its long history from prehistoric times to the Roman times.
Among them stand out: the collection with sculptures and architectural members from the excavations in the temple of Artemis and the findings from the excavations in the city and the cemetery of Garitsa. Among the most impressive exhibits are the bronze statuettes dating from the Archaic to the Roman era, as well as the clay figurines and statuettes from the sanctuaries of Corfu. Among them stand out those of the goddess Artemis as Potnia Theron.
An important exhibit is the impressive monumental pediment of Gorgos, which comes from the temple of Artemis and dates back to 580 BC. It is the oldest stone pediment preserved from an ancient temple.
Also important is the Leo of Menekratos, which dates back to the 7th century. BC and is a beautiful work of a Corinthian sculptor. It is also worth mentioning the part of the porin pediment (it comes from the area of Figaret and dates from around 500 BC) which depicts a Dionysian banquet in which the god Dionysos and a teenager take part lying on a bed. The collection of finds from Paleopolis is also noteworthy, which - among other things - includes tools and bone objects.
