The Museum of Maritime Art was created in 1983 and in 1990 it was housed in one of the most representative neoclassical houses of the area, an elegant building, restored with much care, which is where the central tarsana of the island was located.
It has a special section dedicated to sponge-making with exhibits such as: scuba diving, diving machines, types of sponges, scouring stones and other sponge accessories as well as models of sponge-boats.
The nautical parts and tools were collected by the traditional mechanic of Symi Tasos Anastasiadis. The models of the boats are works of Antonis Polias.
