The Maritime Museum of Kalymnos, It is located on the coastal zone of Pothia and is housed in the building of the old Vouvallio Technical School, next to the Town Hall.
The maritime tradition of the island, the history and methods of sponging, as well as many objects from ancient shipwrecks are presented here. Objects related to the profession of sponging and the processing of sponges are on display.
In the first room, old photographs from the beginning of the 20th century of the city and the events that took place during the departure of the sponges, stone, lead and iron anchors, nautical charts of the 16th-17th centuries, finds from shipwrecks, stone shells, ship rigging, nautical lanterns, plates with marine shows and miniature boats.
In the second and third rooms you will see sponge accessories from the early 19th century to the present day, such as "trigger stones" (stones for sinking divers), nautical instruments (hexagon, compass, barometer, mile-meter), diving board and air pumps. Sponge processing tools and shells are also on display.
