North-west of Xanthi, at an altitude of 150 meters, is the men's Monastery of the Grand Commanders. There are no surviving sources that testify to the history of the Monastery. In all probability it is a Byzantine building of Agioritean architecture of the 15th century. The monastery flourished during the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century it was rebuilt by the Metropolitan of Xanthi Ioakeim Sgouros.
Today, the Xanthi Ecclesiastical School is housed in the grounds of the Monastery.
