In 1972, the women's Monastery of Agia Irini the Great Martyr was founded on a hill northeast of Xanthi. The Monastery was founded by the Metropolitan of Xanthi and Peritheori Mr. Antonios Claudatos (+25.7.94) while the founder was Archim. Antonios Dalatsis (+13.1.94). It functions to this day as a model women's commune and also contributes to the social and functional work of the local church. The nuns, Palestinian by origin, treat orphans from the war zone of their homeland as well as children of distressed large families.
