MONASTERY OF PANAGIA OF MEGALES PYLES

Opposite the Pyli, in the neighborhood of Porta-Panagia, is the famous Byzantine church of the same name, which used to be the catholicon of the Stauropigian monastery, which bore the name of the Invincible Theotokos. It was dissolved during the Turkish occupation. The temple was built in 1283 by the reverend Ioannis Angelos Komnenos Doukas, illegitimate son of the despot of Epirus Michael II Doukas. It consists of the main temple and the later (otherwise earlier) exonarthex.
