The Monastery of Agios Gerasimos is located at the highest point of the traditional settlement of Makrinitsa, 17 km from Volos. It is a women's monastery, built under a rock, dating around 1792. Here Saint Gerasimos the Younger (mid 17th century - 1741) built his cell, while after his death a church was built by the faithful and finally in 1945 the Monastery. The monastic complex includes a stone-built temple, a newer temple with a bell tower at the entrance, two-story buildings (cells, hostels) made of stone and wood, a large courtyard with benches (for visitors). There is also a Library where rare editions of paternal texts are kept. 15 nuns live in the monastery. On August 15, the relic and the icon of the Saint are transferred for pilgrimage to the church of the Assumption of Theotokos Makrinitsa while on the eve of the Mid-Pentecost they are transported on foot to the area of Fytoko where a vigil takes place in the evening.
