The Monastery of Panagia of Kounistra is located at a distance of 8 km from the city and is the patron saint of the island.
It was founded in the 17th century and is dedicated to the Entry of the Virgin. According to popular tradition, the icon of the Virgin Mary was found hanging on a pine tree and was shaking. That is where the name "Kunistra" came from.
