The Monastery of Panagia Gorgoepikou is built on the western slopes of the Goula hill which dominates Nestani and is located at an altitude of 680 m. From the position where the monastery is built, an excellent view of the Mantineia basin is offered.
A road leads to the monastery from Nestani, while it is 16 km from Tripoli.
Tradition says that Gorgoepikoos was founded in 1030 or 1080 AD.
However, historical evidence (mainly documents) testify that the monastery has been operating since 1536 AD.
The fact that the Holy Monastery is built in an area with a very ancient, as it seems cult tradition, where various archaic and early Christian architectural remains have been identified, allows the assumption that it is a successor form of worship of some ancient deity.
The stone-paved staircase of the monastery leads to magnificent buildings dating from 1740. The church belongs to the architectural type of the three-bay vaulted basilica. The grounds of the monastery as well as the grounds are particularly well cared for. The monastery is surrounded by a green pine forest.
Gorgoepikou Monastery celebrates on August 15. Today it is a nunnery.
