In 1314 the Hieromonk Neophytos of Kleisouri founded the monastery. In 1813, another Kleisouriot monk, Isaias Pistas from the monastery of Iberon on Mount Athos, gave life to the monastery again by returning to his special homeland after a vision of the Virgin Mary.
During the years of the Macedonian struggle, he treated and hosted several Macedonian fighters. In its premises, Pavlos Melas formed the nuclei of the fight.
