Third among the twenty monasteries of Mount Athos, the Iberon Monastery was built at the end of the 10th century. by the Georgian (Iberian) monks Ioannis and Euthymios in the place where the Monastery of Clement used to exist. Like other monasteries, it flourished in the 16th century. and large painting works were executed at this time (catholic frescoes, etc.) Built next to the sea, it is surrounded by the four wings in the shape of a rectangle. In the center is the central church of the Dormition of the Virgin, dating from the time of the founders (10th century), as well as the two chapels important for their history, Panagia Portaitissa and the Holy Forerunner of Clement. The largest part of the wings was rebuilt on the site of older buildings in the 19th century. A multi-member monastic brotherhood has devoted itself today to the restoration of the ruined buildings that surround the monastery, alongside the hospitality of pilgrims and the service of many scientists, who arrive from all over the world to study the historical wealth of the monastery. The monastery celebrates August 15th - Assumption of the Virgin Mary - (August 28th according to the New Calendar) and the celebration is celebrated every year with special splendor.
