ARCHANGELS MONASTERY - Serifos

The monastery of Taxiarches, dedicated to the Archangels Michael and Gabriel who are also the protectors of the island, is the most important monument of the island.
Located near the village of Galini, it dates from 1572 and had a fortress character.
It is built with high outer walls (about 10 meters high) with battlements, which protected it throughout history from looting and pirate raids, as it was known that priceless treasures were kept inside.
A co-educational school operated in the Monastery, which owned many Venetian estates and great wealth.
