MONASTERY OF THE DORMITION OF VIRGIN MARY - Naxos

In the northern part of the island, at an altitude of 220 m, near the village of Tripodes (or Bivlos), the Monastery of Panagia Tripodiotissa is located. The monastery, which dates back to the 16th century, was the Metochi of the Metropolis of Naxos, while today it belongs to the Parish of Tripodi. The Monastery is no longer in operation. The building complex includes the church of the Dormition with the high bell tower (with a triple bell tower), various ground and two-story buildings (auxiliary areas, hostels). Marble inscriptions on the lintels of the temple refer to its renovations from time to time. The church is a two-aisled, vaulted basilica type with a gynekonite (the so-called "Lazarus cell"). The wood-carved iconostasis with rare despotic images of various styles and the marble floor of the temple (where the tombs of priests are located) are of interest. Handwritten evangelical sayings are preserved on the ceiling and walls. On the north side of the church's precinct, you can see the small precinct that used to be the village cemetery. The church celebrates with a big festival on August 23, the 9th day of Panagia.
