MONASTERY OF SAINT PANTELEIMON

MONASTERY OF SAINT PANTELEIMON - Kea (Tzia)

On the top of Mount Agios Panteleimon, 12 km southwest of Chora, is the Monastery of Agios Panteleimon. The founder of the monastery is the Archbishop of Chalkidos Agios Timotheus (founder of Penteli Monastery). It is said that the Saint fled to the island after being persecuted by Vravrona and remained here until his death in 1590. The Monastery was built in the 16th century and restored in the 17th century. Only the church of Agios Panteleimon is preserved from the monastery complex. It is a cruciform basilica with a dome, 2 naves and a belfry at the entrance. The hymnal with the hagiographies of 8 Hierarchs is also preserved. The temple celebrates on August 16.
