The Monastery of Prophet Hlias is located near the beautiful and verdant village of Poustika, 21 km west of Pethymnos. In its wider area an intense religious life had developed since the second Byzantine period and there were many cells and monasteries, such as those of Panagia Kera and Saint John the Theologian. Today, only the monastery of Prophet Hlias is preserved, a fortress-type monastery, which has the entrance from the north side of the building complex.
