MONASTERY OF SAINT ANTONIUS

MONASTERY OF SAINT ANTONIUS - Rethymno

The Holy Monastery of Agios Antonios is located in the location of Katevati, 6 km from the village of Akoumia (or Koumia) in the southeast of Rethymnon (Municipality of Agios Vassiliou), at an altitude of 525m. To reach the monastery, one must travel a distance of 15 minutes by car on a dirt road from the Akoumia area.

The Monastery was built after the liberation and was rebuilt by Father Theodosios Damvakerakis, who was an ascetic in the area for about 50 years. Until 1974 there was a small church on the site. With the efforts of Father Theodosios, the monastic complex was formed with churches, cells, a courtyard and auxiliary spaces. The Monastery is built on his own property in Katevati and includes the churches of Agios Antonios, Agios Nektarios and Panagia. In the church of Agios Nektarios, which was built last, there is a large icon depicting all the Saints. In the church of Panagia, built on a rock, is the large icon "Rodon the Amaranth". The Monastery celebrates on January 17.
