VIDIANI MONASTERY

VIDIANI MONASTERY - Lasithi

The Vidiani monastery is located on the northwestern side of the Plateau, at the foot of Mount Louloudaki. It owes its name to the founder of Vidos. Today it is dedicated to Zoodochos Pigi. It began to be built in 1854. Omer Pasha set fire to the monastery in 1867. However, the abbots rebuilt the monastery on the ruins of the old one. During the German occupation, the occupiers arrested, tortured and finally killed the abbot of the monastery, Dorotheos Tsagarakis, who collaborated with the national resistance. Today, restoration and restoration work is being carried out so that a Natural History museum can operate on the site of the monastery.
