KREMASTON MONASTERY

KREMASTON MONASTERY - Lasithi

The Monastery is located south of Neapolis, on the road to Vryses. It was built by Nikiforos Anifads in 1622. It also operated during the Turkish occupation when the monks were engaged in silk farming. In 1821 the Hidden School was founded by Bishop Petros Dorotheos, in which G. Lymoridis, Leonidas Padakis and G. Kamaratos also taught. During the revolution of 1866 the monks gathered all the relics and books and hid them in a cave for safekeeping. The Turks destroyed the Monastery, the relics were unfortunately destroyed by the humidity. In 1992, the Venerable Metropolitan of Petra and Herronissos, Mr. Nektarios, restored the Monastery. The Monastery currently operates a School of Hagiography, attended by nuns from Romania.
