The Holy Monastery of Faneromeni Crete or Ierapetra is a historical Monastery located in the area of Ierapetra and towards the SW. of the "thick sand" cove. This Monastery is better known to the residents of Crete as the "Panagia ton Gournion" Monastery. The Catholic Church of the Monastery is built inside a cave in which the icon of the Virgin Mary was found in the 15th century, where it is said that the church and then the Monastery were built.
The Holy Monastery of Faneromeni Crete is a monastery dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary and celebrates the Fifteenth of August. Besides the Abbot, the monastery is served by 3 monks. Administratively, it belongs to the Holy Metropolis of Ierapytni and Sitia which, after the other 6 Holy Metropolises of Crete, constitutes the semi-autonomous Archdiocese of Crete, an ecclesiastical province of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
