AXION ESTI MONASTERY - Lasithi

The Holy Sanctuary of Resurrection of Sotiros (or Axion Esti) is located 2 km northwest of Ierapetra. The church belongs to the type of three-aisled basilica with a dome. The monastic complex includes the temple, the monks' cells and south of the Monastery the temple of the Holy Trinity. The wall painting of the church, the icon of Panagia Portaitissa and the iconostasis of the sanctuary were designed by Emm. Beteinakis and Mich. Stavroulakis. In 1977 the monastery was founded and since 1985 it has been operating as a women's convent with 2 nuns. The Monastery celebrates the day of the Resurrection but also on June 11, the Blessed Virgin Mary.
