RHODIA MONASTERY - Heraklion

The Rodia Monastery is known as the Holy Sanctuary of the Entrances of the Virgin. The village of Rodia (or Rogdia) is located at an altitude of 300 m on the slope of Marmarokefala, 16 km northwest of Heraklion. It is a women's convent founded in 1990 by Metropolitan Nektarios Papadakis. The area of the monastery (7 acres in total) belonged to Agapi Sbokou, who donated it to the Archdiocese of Crete for the purpose of creating the Monastery. In the center of the courtyard of the monastery is the holy church of Panagia, around it the cells of the monks (two-story arched), the guesthouses and other auxiliary spaces. The small single-aisled church is of the Aegean style and celebrates November 21, the day of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
