KALYVIANI MONASTERY

KALYVIANI MONASTERY - Heraklion

It belongs to the municipal district of Faneromeni and is 60 km from Heraklion. It is mentioned for the first time in the 1900 census with 11 male and 7 female residents. According to one hypothesis, during the period of the Venetian rule, a local feudal lord built the church of Panagia i Kalyviani, as they used to build small private churches in their fiefdoms. During the Turkish occupation, the church was occupied and used as a stable and warehouse. Later, in 1873, an icon of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary was found in the area. The villagers asked the Turkish conqueror of the area to grant them a small area around the ruined church in order to rebuild it. The refusal of the Turk did not deter the Christians, who forwarded the matter to higher administrative authorities, resulting in a diplomatic incident that resulted in the sale to Christians of the church, which was renovated and became a pancretan pilgrimage of Christians.

In 1956-57, the active Metropolitan of Gortyn and Arcadia, Timotheus Papoutsakis, created a Christian State with the Monastery as its center, building a Female Orphanage, Nursing Home, Home Economics School, Youth Foundation, School of Cutting-Sewing, Primary School, Printing Office, Weaving, Knitting and Sewing Workshop, Museum etc.
