It is located 24 km from Heraklion, in the area of Kato Asita and is built in the foothills of Psiloritis, at an altitude of 530m. It was destroyed by the Turks when the latter occupied the island, rebuilt and destroyed again in the revolution of 1866, as, due to its mountainous position, it functioned as the seat of revolutionaries and revolutionary assemblies.
