On a verdant hillside, above the village of Potames, is the Monastery of Gouverniotissa, which probably dates back to the second half of the 14th century BC. Until the beginning of the 20th century, it functioned as a monastic share of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem. Nowadays the Monastery is not functioning, but its building facilities with cells and old ovens, as well as the church of Panagia which was the monastery's catholicon during the Venetian period, are preserved in a fairly good condition. The church, which follows the architectural type of the free cross with a dome, has an impressive mural decoration of the 14th century, in line with the artistic standards of Constantinople.
