AGIAS MONASTERY

AGIAS MONASTERY - Heraklion

The Agia Moni (or Dormition Monastery) is located in Ano Viannos (altitude 560 m.), around 40 km west of Ierapetra. It is an Androa monastery that covers a small area. It includes the modest church of the Dormition of the Virgin and the monks' cells. Characteristic is the marble relief decoration of the central entrance of the temple with a pointed end. Regarding its establishment and its history, information is limited. According to one version, 3 Cypriot nuns, who lived in Keratokampos and founded the church of Agios Dimitrios - due to pirate raids - abandoned the church and moved south of Ano Viannos where they built the Dormition Monastery. The Holy Monastery functioned normally until 1842, but then and until 1865 it was abandoned by the monks and deserted. Today it operates with 4 monks. The monastery celebrates with a big festival on August 15.
