The monastery of Agios Nikolaos, which is located in Skamneli, Zagori, was founded by three monks of the monastery of Agia Paraskevi in 1683, among whom was a certain Theofanis. The history of this monastery is newer, but there were old portable icons, of great value, which were unfortunately stolen in recent years. The monastery is located at the entrance to the village of Skamneli. From the Monastery, its catholicon is preserved today, in the style of a single-aisled basilica, built with gray stone, while the roof is covered with slate slabs. Hagiographies are preserved inside the church, while in the precinct there are also some ruined cells.
The monastery of Agios Nikolaos Skamneli flourished until the liberation from the Turkish occupation. After 1912 the monastery was deserted. The remains of the library of the monastery, together with those of the library of Agia Paraskevi, were collected by Theofanis Fragoulis in the central church of Panagia in the village of Skamneli. Among these books were also some valuable manuscripts. Today, on the site of the old monastery, is the village cemetery.
