The Monastery of Genesiou tis Theotokos (or Panagia tis Episkopi) is located near the traditional village of Spanochori, 8 km from the town of Lefkada. We do not know the exact date of establishment of the Monastery. Various sources link the monastery to the Revolution of Vukendra, in 1357, where the villagers revolted due to the unbearable taxation imposed by the Frankish ruler George Gratsianos. It is also mentioned that the Monastery collapsed after the earthquake of 1625 and that it was the seat of the Archbishop of Lefkada and Agia Mavra until 1697, when it was moved to the city of Lefkada. The monastery is also connected with the Peasant Revolt (1819) against the British conquerors due to high taxation. In the 20th century, a new church was built after the destruction of the monastic complex by earthquakes. Today the newest temple is preserved, which functions as a Cemetery and as a chapel of the Parish of Spanochori. The entrance to the Cemetery area, located next to the church, is through a stone vaulted door with a belfry. The temple celebrates on September 8.
