VLACHERNON MONASTERY IN SCRIPERO - Corfu

The Monastery of the Most Holy Theotokos of Vlacherna is located near the village of Skripero, in the northwestern central part of the island. The name Vlaherna or Vlaheraina comes from the homonymous church in Constantinople. The Monastery dates back to the 18th century. It used to be a women's monastery, which was later converted into a men's monastery, and today 1 monk resides there. In 1914, when old woman Charitini (+1979) came to the monastery, the temple had been turned by the Italians into an ammunition depot. The walled monastic complex includes the Church of the Theotokos, the two-story flat belfry with a triple spire and a two-story building (cells, auxiliary spaces). The temple is of medium size, rectangular, with arched windows and a sloping roof. The monastery celebrates with a festival on July 2.
