The Monastery of Saints Michael and Gabriel is located near the village of Kamara, on the south side of Kastellani. It is a Byzantine monastery that probably dates back to the 15th century. The church of Taxiarches is a single-aisled basilica with 17th century frescoes. Inside the church one can distinguish architectural elements incorporated in various places (e.g. in the holy table), such as Doric style columns as well as amphiglyphic chests (decorated with birds and the cross) from the early Christian era (on the floor and on the iconostasis). An ancient Greek sanctuary and then an early Christian basilica probably existed on the site. The tall, stone-built belfry of the entrance, which is two-storey with a triple spire, has been preserved to this day.
