On the west coast, at the top of Mount Stavros tou Polemos, there is a temple dedicated to the Holy Cross. The Cross of War is the third highest peak of Symi (533 m.) after Vigla (616 m.) and Kokkimidis (594 m.). Cannons were placed in this position to protect the island in time of war. In the former monastery, in addition to the walled church of the Holy Cross, there is also the church of Aghii Anargyri. The Monastery is not inhabited today, but the church celebrates annually on March 18, the Sunday of the Adoration of the Cross.
