Near ancient Lindos, in the forest of Laermos, is the ancient Tharri monastery, built on the ruins of an early Christian basilica of the 5th AD. century. Only the cross-shaped catholicon is preserved from the Byzantine church. Regarding the name of the Monastery, it is said that the Constantinopolitan princess Tharsey, who was on the island, dreamed of the Archangel Michael telling her that she would be cured of the disease that afflicted her. When he got well he founded the monastery and gave it the name Tharri (or Thari). In the monastery area you can see the church, dedicated to Taxiarch Michael, the chapels of Timios Prodromos, Agios Nektarios, Agios Eleftherios as well as old buildings (in the courtyard) that have been repaired and expanded. The stone-built temple of Taxiarchis with the imposing dome dates between the 9th and 11th AD. century. Wall paintings from the Byzantine years until today are preserved. The oldest, from 12 AD century, they represent Saint Eleftherios and Saint Gregory the Great and are in the Byzantine Museum of Rhodes. The 13th century fresco, which covers the area from the sanctuary to the dome, is preserved in a fairly good condition. The fresco, which depicts the Archangel Michael flanked by the archangels Gabriel and Raphael, is in poor condition. The Monastery celebrates on November 8 - the Synagogue of the Archangels, on May 21 - Saints Constantine and Helen - and on December 15, Saint Eleftherios which covers the area from the sanctuary to the dome, is kept in fairly good condition.
