PROPHET MONASTERY - Rhodes

The Monastery of Prophet Amos is located 14 km from Rhodes, near Faliraki. The Prophet Amos (from Tekue, Israel) lived 800 years before the birth of Christ and was the father of the Prophet Isaiah. According to tradition the Prophet Elias, whose monastery was on the top of the mountain, had a fight with Amos and threw a rock to destroy said monastery. But Amos stopped the rock by piercing it. It is said that this rock is preserved on the back side of the Monastery.

The church of the Prophet Amos is built on the ruins of an early Christian basilica (5th-6th century AD) and bears fragments of Byzantine and post-Byzantine wall paintings. The monastery complex with the temple and its enclosure was built in 1838. The Monastery celebrates on June 14.
