On the west side of the island, on the mountain of Prophet Ilias and near the village of Salakos is the Monastery of Prophet Ilias. This place is considered as ".. very mystical and peaceful of the most beautiful places on earth, combining the wonderful mountainous nature, with an exquisite and panoramic view of the sea" (Archim. Chrysostomos Moustakas)
It is said that the icon of the Prophet Elias was found at this point and then the homonymous temple was built, which was destroyed by the Turks. The present monastery was later rebuilt with the permission of the Sultan. The facade of the entrance to the monastery is characteristic, which is triangular and ends in 3 vaulted openings. The church of Prophet Ilias is a single room, vaulted with a bell tower, a wood-carved iconostasis and a floor decorated with black and white pebbles. The Monastery celebrates on July 20.
