In the Municipality of Nea Koutali, the Diaporio wetland of approximately 500 acres is of particular importance, located in the SW of the island in the depth of of Kontias bay and within the administrative limits of the Municipality of Kontias. Its offshore part is swampy with the characteristic flora of lake biotopes (burla) and with small peripheral parts of solid. The part towards the sea is flooded in winter by sea water. It presents a remarkable avifauna and a rich insect fauna due to the swampy nature of the biotope. Birdlife includes seagulls, mallards, swans and flamingos. It is surrounded by farmland.
