The ancient name of the island was Pityoussa, which means pine tree, and indeed - even today - the gentle hills of the island are verdant. It was first inhabited in the Bronze Age, while during the Turkish rule, Spetses became an important naval power and took the lead in the Revolution of 1821, during which Laskarina Bouboulina emerged as a great heroine. The fortified port of Dapia with its cannons was the gathering place of the leaders of the great uprising.
