It was originally called Oinoi or Oinoni and has an important history of more than 4,000 years. In ancient times, Aegina had a very large population, while it had a large navy and good fortifications. It took an active part in the Greek Revolution, while it was also the capital of modern Greece, when Kapodistrias established the seat of his government on the island.
