ARGYROKASTRO (Castle)

Above Magouliana and at the top of a steep hill at an altitude of 1450 m. is the highest castle of the Peloponnese, Argyrokastro, also called "Gortynia dynamari".
The castle, which was built during the Frankish period, dominates the entire area as a strategic point with natural protection was chosen to offer particular security.
The castle is in a dilapidated state today. A part of the wall with the opening of the gate is still preserved, while in the area there are piled volumes of its building members. The walls are built on the edge of a steep rock, with a height of about 100m.
As for its dating,. the exact date of its construction is not yet known, nor is its founder and its exact use documented by historical evidence. The most likely version is that it was built by a Frankish district and served to control the area.
From the castle gate you can see the lower mahalas of Magouliana village, with the church of Panagia.
In the surrounding area there are many caves, which in the past served as a refuge for the locals when they were in danger from the foreign invaders. Some of them were fortified and had a rainwater cistern as well as an underground escape exit.
