It is a small fortified island at the entrance to the bay of Nafplio. It was fortified for the first time during the period of the 1st Venetian rule (1389-1540) by the Venetian Seer Pasqualigo, who commissioned the work to the architect Antonio Gambello. The change in the form of the castle in Renaissance style, according to the needs of the siege and the new requirements, can be observed in Bourtzi. In 1715 the castle was occupied by the Turks, until 1822, when it came under the ownership of the Greeks.
It was an integral part of the wider fortification of the city for many centuries. In the first years after the liberation of the new Greek state, the castle served as the residence of the executioners because they were "hated by the inhabitants of Nafplion". In the 1950s, a hotel operated there, which was operated by a private person. The hotel hosted many famous personalities.
Today the site can be visited by boat from the port of Nafplio. In summer, musical evenings are organized with Greek and foreign performers.
