PALAMIDI CASTLE - Argolis

(tel. 27520 28036)

It is built on a high hill to the east of Akronaflia at a height of 216m. For the first time, Palamidi was fortified by the Venetians during the Second Venetian Occupation (1686-1715) with a perfect system of synchronized fortification. Palamidi is a typical baroque fortress, designed by the engineers Giaxich and Lasalle. In 1715 it was occupied by the Turks until 1822, when it fell into the hands of the Greeks.
The most important monuments and architectural ensembles are:
- The Castle: Venetian fortification work from the beginning of the 18th century. It consists of eight bastions surrounded by walls. A high uphill stepped rise reinforced with small battlements leads to the Fort on its NW side.
- Church of Agios Andreas: Inside the eponymous rampart of the fortress. It is housed with a semi-cylindrical dome and enters on the eastern half inside one of the arches that support the walk of the walls. Its free part is double-sided.
- Kolokotroni Prison: One of the bastions, the so-called "Miltiadis" was used as a prison for the hero of the Revolution.
Minor maintenance works have been carried out on the walls. The 5th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities has recently carried out restoration work on the retaining wall of the castle as well as the reconstruction of a collapsed section at the southern end of the wall.
