KEFALOS CASTLE

KEFALOS CASTLE - Kos

The Castle of Kefalos is located at the SE end of the village, on top of a hill. The oldest reference by a traveler to it is from 1420, but it already existed from the Byzantine era, since the oldest written reference to the Castle is from 1271. The castle of Kefalos is mentioned as a secure fortress and indeed in the fierce Turkish attack of 1457 it managed to resisted successfully.

In the devastating earthquake of 1493, it suffered serious damage and was abandoned until 1505. During the Turkish occupation, it was used for garrisoning the garrison. Until the 19th century, travelers discerned and recorded the coats of arms of the Knights of Rhodes on its walls, but today only a small part of them survives. The castle is built with small stones and inside there are water reservoirs.
