KNIGHT HOUSE

This is the house of the Kommentoris (commander) of Kos Francesco Sans. It is located on the Miaouli Coast, and was built within the perimeter wall of the Medieval city and in contact with it.

It is the only surviving secular building of the Knight period in Kos, built in 1514 by the Commander (Commentator) of Kos Francesco Sans. The house consists of two vaulted rectangular rooms. Initially, the main view was the west (on Messolongiou Street). But during the Turkish occupation, the building was used as a cafe and then two doors were opened on the eastern side (on the Miaoulis Coast), symmetrical with those on the west. The formation of the eastern side took place during the Italian occupation. The masonry is well cared for, carved stones, relief cornices and older second-use material have been used. Above and to the right of the south entrance of the west side is a coat of arms with the coat of arms of the Grand Master Fabrizio Del Carretto and the coat of arms of the comeder Francesco Sans, dated 1514.

The building was restored by the 4th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities and is used as an archaeological library and as an exhibition space.
