ARRIANA (Archaeological Site)

The village is located on the northern side of the Prefecture of Rodopi, 34 km from Komotini, near the Filiuri River. The historian Herodotus, recounting the march of Xerxes in Thrace during the Persian Wars, refers to the ancient river Lissos which is identified with today's Filiuri (or Filiuri). The river crosses the Rhodope plain and empties into the Thracian Sea passing through a series of settlements rich in archaeological finds. In the Kajalir gerler geri (or Petrotopos) site, 3 km north of Arrianes, prehistoric sherds with plastic and incised decoration were found during the construction of an embankment on the Filiuri River. In the same area, a Roman bath was discovered (mid 2nd -3rd century AD) on which a cemetery was created in the mid 3rd -4th AD. century.
