ALOS (Archaeological Site) - Magnesia

City of Fthiotidos Achaia. It is mentioned in the Iliad. The ancient Alos was probably located on Magoula Plataniotiki and was destroyed in 346 BC. by the Macedonian general Parmenion. A strong wall with towers (early 4th century BC) is preserved on the hill.

Nea Alos was founded after 302 BC. by King Demetrius Poliorkites. Built at a strategic point, it blocked the coastal road from Larissa to Lamia. The city and the citadel are surrounded by a wall with gates and towers. Foundations of Hellenistic houses and perhaps remains of market buildings were found. On the hill of the acropolis, remains of larger, perhaps public buildings. On the beach there are burial mounds, some of them excavated.
